THESIS:
The Fountain of Youth was discovered long time ago and it added to many explorations along with new facilities in the modern world.
Is there any kind of myths you have believed all along? For example take Santa Claus. Children are taught to listen to their parents and they will receive a present on Christmas. Also some people think El Dorado, City of Gold, a myth. These myths are told to set a standard of expectation or to motivate people. Sometimes these myths can make people who believe risk anything to prove the myth right or wrong leading to new expeditions. Take the fountain of youth for example. We know this myth set the Spaniards out on a voyage to search for this fountain of youth. We know this myth of youth eternity originated from Spain, but made caused for this myth to happen? Was it that important for the Spaniards?
In India there was an oracle who is also known as Khwaja Khzir. Indians had thought the river of life was up north (Coomaraswamy). Also in Greece there was a person in particular named Herodotus. He claimed that there was a special water. He also announced that this fountain was to be found near the Ethiopians. Over the periods of life this myth was popular but also was changed as the myth was passed down. How this happened was the Europeans had heard that this myth existed in the Caribbean. The tipping point of the Spaniards to go on an expedition for this fountain was when they had heard word from the Native Americans regarding the fountain of youth (Stimpson).
Juan Ponce De Leon was an crew of Christopher Columbus’ voyage. He didn’t return with the rest of the crew but instead governed Saint Domingo. This led him to an island, known as Puerto Rico today. He claimed this land for Spain and governed this place. Soon he was executed from his position due to the violent abuse he had done to the Natives. Later Ponce De Leon had heard of the Fountain of Youth when he has an island in the Bahamas. During this search he had discovered Florida and conquered this place (Kids Past).
When Juan Ponce De Leon had went out on an expedition this age was known as the exploration age. This age led to many land being conquered and named for the country. From this expedition Ponce De Leon had learned the Fountain of Youth and how this possess eternal life and youth. As a human being who doesn’t want to stay young and conquer for a long time. I think this was what drove Ponce De Leon along with the other conquers on a expedition to find this spring that contained forever youth.
Over all the fountain of youth had caused a lot of differences for us today. For example now Puerto Rico is a spanish speaking country as well as Florida being named after spanish. Even if this myth was not proven these days we have scientist having a museum in Florida that shows something similar to what Juan Ponce De Leon was looking for.
